GAIGE CARTHERS
GREAT KHAN | HETEROSEXUAL |
TWENTY-SEVEN | HUMAN |
appearance
A young, Caucasian man of around six foot with dark, dishevelled (and slightly wild) hair straggled in various directions. He wears a pair of biker goggles encrusted with spikes, in the vain attempt that the Khans may perceive him as a bit more of a badass than he actually is. Actually, when worn, they are prescription goggles that help his eyesight, crafted by an acquaintance he had when with the Followers of the Apocalypse. He had drowsy-looking, dull blue eyes that are almost grey: sometimes he can appear bored or exasperated without actually intending to.
Gaige wears the gear of the Khans. That is their thick leather vest lined with tufts of fur; splashed with a flame-like design at the front and the emblem of the Great Khans on the back. A pair of rough blue jeans, fitted with protective leather shields and a holster at the side. The jeans are tucked into leather lace-up boots, which have shown a lot of wear for the relatively short time he has been with the Khans. With his arms exposed, he has a multitude of scratches and dirt, as you would expect; but a particularly long scar running the entire length of his forearm.
He tends to vaguely smell of chemicals.

personality
Despite being rather sweet when he was younger, Gaige learned quickly that it didn't do in this world to be sweet. Although he seems fairly easy to coerce and manipulate, it would be better to describe him as a risk-taker: impulsive and brash, often playing his hand at life without giving much thought to the possible consequences. He's a gambler who doesn't weigh up the odds and play strategically; more often than not he relies on his ability to get away quickly, after the storm had already hit. Sometimes Gaige acts a lot stupider than he is; perhaps as a sign of defence, or perhaps because he is genuinely scatter-brained at certain times. But, overall, he is fairly intelligent - perhaps more in a practical way, where he can cook up some pretty decent chems.
With the exception of his reckless nature, Gaige is pretty laid-back. He doesn't have much of a problem with anyone from any particular group: although most of the Great Khans have an unwavering blood lust for any remnants of the NCR. If the Khans were planning to attack wandering soldiers, for example, he would go along with them without question. It may be one of the contributing factors as to why he was let into the Khans so easily: while having a weak moral compass and morality overall, they like him because he just gets stuff done, without question. He's living to earn a living, and has quite a lot of fun in the chem trade.
When first encountering Gaige, he often acts tougher than he actually is. It's a front, so to speak, instead of intimidation tactics. He just likes people to think that he's a badass. When he's not... quite there, to tell the truth.
Gaige can be playful and cheeky at times, and tries to be funny. More often than not though - he's the one laughing at his own joke. Sometimes it isn't a good thing: trying to crack jokes with Fiends jacked-up on Jet will have a shot fired in his direction. As he say, he's kind of tactless like that.

background
Gaige was born in Westside, to a prostitute of the Casa Madrid Apartments' Brothel and some wanderer who had enough caps to buy her for the night. Although he was very well aware of his background from a young age, Gaige preferred to sleep on the streets of Westside than anywhere near his hooker Mom. Despite she being a fairly caring woman; her interest mostly resided in sleeping with men, particularly the wannabe-gamblers who had forked through the Mojave in search of the city of sin. Occasionally he would amble around the apartments in search of food, but was encouraged by the other young citizens to help grow crops for passing trade.
From a young age he learned the importance of earning a living. While quite an energetic, raucous youth; he never stepped a toe out of line. He'd known other boys and girls from Westside to take up theft and raiding; by joining some of the raider gangs across the Mojave. But he kept his conscience clean. That's not to say that the Fiends didn't regularly turn up at their door step: but what with a group of danger-seeking maniacs dwelling in the old sewerage tunnels (later known as The Thorn); Westside was always fairly well protected.
As the competitors of The Thorn seemed to thrive, so did Gaige's curiosity. He was nearing sixteen at this point, and he'd barely wielded a knife. But, provoked by other kids that he was chicken shit, Gaige tried his hand at a fight against a Gecko. He got badly bitten: that thing seemed tougher than your run-of-the-mill rock Gecko. Also, it was ridiculously fast. Keeping up with it was exhausting. When landing a lucky hit straight through its eye; Gaige took it upon himself to learn more of combat - he didn't want to rely merely on luck, or the protection of others. Westside suddenly seemed so small: too small for him to stay any longer.
After five more years of associating with the people of The Thorn and protecting Westside from Fiend attacks, Gaige decided to journey East in search of Freeside. Now packed with a gun, he thought there may be some opportunities in Freeside for a Gun for Hire. After facing the rejection of many, eventually Gaige came across the Old Mormon Fort - safe hold for the Followers of the Apocalypse. Luckily for him, they were looking for mercenaries and able-bodied soldiers to protect them as they travelled throughout the Wasteland. It wasn't necessarily what he expected - but he took up their offer.
Fairly soon after that, the Followers said they were going to journey to a gated community in the far west of the Mojave; to visit a clan who called themselves The Great Khans.
He didn't know much about them, but managed to get a decent amount of information from the Followers he travelled with. Apparently, they were going to attempt to educate The Khans to synthesising their own medicines; from what they had in the Canyon. They met trouble along the way, of course. First were wandering Vipers, then a group of Fiends. As he and the rest of the mercenaries were able to fend them off, they finally made it to Red Rock Canyon.
The Khans - fairly sceptical about their arrival - first demanded whether they had any affiliation with the NCR. When it was clear that did not, and after a negotiation with Papa Khan, the Followers were allowed to proceed. Gaige, who knew some of the properties of various crops from having helped grow them in Westside; could follow along with what they were trying to teach the Khans. They introduced them to apparatus, showed them how they worked, and demonstrated the process of creating stimpaks. But the Khans, more interested in the technology for other means, were dismissive of the Follower's aid. Now they understood a little more of how drug synthesis worked, they fancied themselves as chem dealers.
The Followers, feeling depleted and rather annoyed with the Khans; retreated back to Freeside. But Gaige remained.
It was a tough initiation. Thankfully his time spent in The Thorn paid off when fighting in the ring; and what with his understanding of the Followers' technique of drug synthesising, he was accepted into their ranks. He worked solely in the Red Rock Lab, alongside other Khans. When it came to light that they were going to cook chems for the Fiends; Gaige may have spent a moment or two deliberating whether he cared or not. Okay, so the Fiends attacked Westside - his home town. But wasn't it just the place where he was born? He had a new place now - with the Khans.
He thought, well, so what? What the hell, let's do this.
Gaige is still treated as a newbie within the gang, and isn't entirely trusted. Some of the Khans are quick to jump at someone's throat; and for a very good reason. But, as the Independent Vegas was proclaimed and more Fiends concentrated into the area: the Khans had it good. Caps were flowing, Chems were spilling. Things couldn't be better. But, as they say, famous last words.
